(30 abr. 1777, Brunswick, Ducado de Brunswick–23 feb. 1855, Gotinga, Hannover).

Matemático, astrónomo y físico alemán. Hijo de padres pobres, fue un prodigio de asombrosa profundidad. Ya en la adolescencia había realizado demostraciones sorprendentes. Publicó más de 150 trabajos e hizo contribuciones tan importantes como el teorema fundamental del álgebra (en su disertación doctoral), el método de los mínimos cuadrados, la eliminación de Gauss-Jordan (para resolver ecuaciones con matriz) y la curva campana, o curva de error de Gauss (ver distribución normal). Gauss hizo aportes relevantes a la física y a la astronomía y fue pionero en la aplicación de la matemática a la gravitación, la electricidad y el magnetismo. También desarrolló los campos de la teoría de potenciales y del análisis real. Con Arquímedes y Newton, es uno de los más grandes matemáticos de todos los tiempos.
